•••••User's Manual
••Introduction
Image files, particularly 24-bit and 32-bit color images, consume huge amounts of disk storage space and require substantial time to transfer over the telephone. KODAK COLORSQUEEZE™ Image Compression Software uses state-of-the-art algorithms to free-up precious hard disk space, minimize archival disk storage, and conserve telecommunications time. It also capitalizes on Kodak's many years of imaging experience to bring you leading-edge technology and the highest possible quality.
•About COLORSQUEEZE Software
KODAK COLORSQUEEZE Decompress Version Software, is a limited edition of KODAK COLORSQUEEZE Software. This version decompresses images that have been saved in KIC format, but does not allow you to save images in compressed format. Image files can be opened from a disk in KIC format, Tag Image File Format (TIFF), or Apple picture (PICT) format. An optional thumbnail view of each compressed image is displayed in seconds as you browse through file names displayed in the Open dialog box.
Image files that you have opened from disk can be saved in TIFF or PICT format. Images can be copied to the Scrapbook or Clipboard for compatibility with other applications.
COLORSQUEEZE Decompress Software is fully compatible with Apple system software, 6.0.3 or later versions, and will operate under MultiFinder with a minimum of 1.5 MB of memory allocated to this application. Additional memory is strongly recommended.
This software uses virtual memory and requires hard disk storage during operation. Free hard disk space must be at least 1.33 times the size of an uncompressed image.
The 32-Bit QuickDraw file (available from local Apple computer dealers) must be installed in your system folder.
The complete version of this software offers three compression choices-—high medium, or normal-—in a new image format established by Eastman Kodak Company.
•Image Compression
The complete version of COLORSQUEEZE Software uses an optimized compression algorithm called "discrete cosine transformation." Data in this format conforms to the emerging Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) international standard. For programming, the format used by COLORSQUEEZE Software can be considered to be a subset of the TIFF format.
When archiving or backing up color images, a typical 768K file can be compressed in less than 40 seconds on a Macintosh IIcx computer. Even shorter processing times are possible on faster computers available now and expected in the future.
Where critical detail is important to your application, consider using normal or medium compression. If your main objective is minimum file size and some additional loss of detail is acceptable, consider high compression. The compression level you use will depend upon your application.
•Compression Ratios
KODAK COLORSQUEEZE Image Compression Software can reduce 24-bit PICT and TIFF files by factors of approximately 5:1, 8:1, or 14:1. Depending upon the specific image, compression ratios can significantly exceed these values. In most cases, it is virtually impossible to distinguish between the original and reconstructed image, particularly at normal or medium compression settings.
•About This Software
This document flows in the same sequence as the software menus appear on your system. Sections describe use of the Apple System, File, Edit and View menus. Functions used in virtually all Macintosh software are described very briefly because it is assumed you are already familiar with those operations.
•Using This Software
At the desktop, double click on the COLORSQUEEZE Decompress Software icon to begin. A startup screen appears briefly, then a window displaying Apple System, File, Edit, and View pull-down menus. Some menu functions are available only when an image is displayed or another function is active
Many operations can be accessed using shortcut keys identified on the menu. Simply press the command key and the shortcut key to bypass the mouse.
See the Menus section of this document for a complete description of each option. You should be familiar with the operation of your Macintosh computer before using this software.

•Show Clipboard
Displays the image in (or contents of) the Clipboard.
••View Menu
The View Menu adjusts the appearance of the displayed image. For best results, leave the dither feature turned on. A check mark is displayed next to Dithered Display when it is enabled.
Five display options are available—dither new/opened images, dithered display, actual size, zoom in, and zoom out.
•Dither New/Opened Images
Displays all new windows with colors in a dithered pattern. This means that colors are combined from the Apple display palette to closely simulate the actual colors in the image. Dithered colors result in "truer" images that look more natural. This is especially useful if you do not have a display card that supports millions of colors. Dithering will simulate continuous-tone images on monitors that range from two colors (black and white) to 256 colors.
•Dithered Display
Displays current window with colors in a dithered pattern.
•Actual Size
Displays the image at 1x magnification. Use this option if you have zoomed in or zoomed out. After selecting the Actual Size option, you may need to use the zoom box, size box, or scroll bars on the window to view a portion or all of your image.
Note: The bits per pixel resolution, width and height in pixels, and the percentage of zoom are displayed at the bottom left corner of each window next to the horizontal scroll bar. For example, data for a particular image might show 32 bit, 560 x 370, 100%.
•Zoom In
Displays a "magnified" portion of the image. This option can be used several times to enlarge a portion of the image. The resolution of the displayed image decreases as you zoom in.
•Zoom Out
Displays the image at decreased magnification.

•How Many Bits Make a Pixel
32 bits per pixel refers to Apple Computer's standard for full color images. The 32 bits for each pixel includes 8 bits for each Red, Green, Blue color, and a fourth plane for overlays, such as graphics or text.
24 bits per pixel refers to full TIFF images which have 8 bits for each of the Red, Green, and Blue colors.
8 bits per pixel or palletized color images are PICT or TIFF (Type P) images in which the color information has been quantized to a set of 256 colors. Some applications will save in a similar format using as few as 2 bits per pixel.
8 bits per pixel or gray scale images are PICT or TIFF (Type G) files which have a continuous tone gray scale image. Some applications will save in a similar format using as few as 2 bits per pixel--8 bits is considered continuous tone; anything less is considered lossy.
1 bit per pixel or bilevel images are PICT or TIFF (Type B) files where each pixel is either black or white. PICT images of this type are sometimes called PICT1, while gray scale and color PICTs are called PICT2.
•KIC Tips
COLORSQUEEZE™ Software saves compressed images in KIC format, a superset of the TIFF format. Images saved in KIC format can only be opened by applications that support the KIC format.
•PICT Tips
COLORSQUEEZE™ Software opens all PICT files as 32 bit images. Therefore, a 512 x 512 bilevel image will require as much memory space as a 512 x 512 full color image.
COLORSQUEEZE™ Software's compression always operates on a 32 bit pixel image and will compress a bilevel, gray scale or palletized color PICT image, but in some cases, the compressed file will not be smaller than the original. When a bilevel, gray scale or palletized color PICT image is decompressed and saved as a PICT it will always be saved as a 32 bit per pixel image which will be larger than your original file.
•TIFF Tips
COLORSQUEEZE™ Software does not convert TIFF images when they are opened, therefore, only Type R (24 bits per pixel RGB) images can be compressed. When saving files for export to another application, you may find that not all applications can read TIFF files saved by COLORSQUEEZE™ Software. COLORSQUEEZE™ Software follows the published TIFF standard and is as compatible as possible with other software packages. If you find that the TIFF file does not work, try saving the image as a PICT file and then export it.
All images that have been decompressed and are saved by COLORSQUEEZE™ as a TIFF are saved as TIFF type R.
•Printing
COLORSQUEEZE™ Software allows you to print images on an Apple LaserWriter printer. If you have installed version 6.0 of LaserWriter and Laser Prep software, the images will print in gray scale. Full color images take a long time to print. The job can easily take hours!
An important feature of COLORSQUEEZE™ Software printing is that the image will print in the same scale that it is displayed. If an image is small on the screen, the printout will be small. If the image displayed on the screen is larger than a page, the printout will be on more than one page.
When printing palletized TIFF images, we recommend that you save the image as a PICT file, then open the PICT file and print it. If you print a palletized TIFF image and then save it, you will find that the image has been inverted. If this happens, the image can be corrected by printing it and then saving it again.
If problems are encountered in printing and you are using MultiFinder, try to print using Finder (disable MultiFinder using Set Startup from the Special menu in the Finder and then restart your computer).
•Zooming
To zoom in on a specific area of an image, select the area then zoom in.
